DISTRIBUTION OF ACID MUCOPOLYSACCHARIDES IN HUMAN GINGVA
CHUNG TAI-YOUNG
Abstract
1
The gingival connective tissues consists largely of an intercellular substance composed of tissue fluid, mucopolysaccharde, and various fibrous elements. The interest in gingival connective tissue has been concerned with the intercellular mucopolysaccharides, and despite conflicting data largely derived from various histochemical studies, it appears that both sulfate and non-sulfate containing mucopolysaccharides are present. Shultz-Haudt(1958), with biochemical methods, prepared from the human gingiva an acid mucopolysaccharide fraction which consisted of 0.33% of the dry tissue. Aas(1963) demonstrated that the gingival tissue in hyperplasia diphenyihydantoine contained hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate, and that the ratio of glucosamine to galactosamine from the hydrolysates of acid mucopolysaccharides was found to be approximately 0. 7. Recently Sakaki et al. (1972) reported that the acid mucopolysaccharides contained chondroitin sulfate B and A and hyaluronic acid. However, no further details seem to have been reported of acid mucopolysaccharides in the human gingiva.
The aim of the present investigation was to study the isolation and determination of acid mucopolysaccharides from the human gingiva by the method of chemical analysis, two dimensional electrophoresis, and enzymic digestion.
